Transfer of trauma within families

Trauma can be transferred to other members of the family in various ways. This is called vicarious trauma or secondary transfer of trauma.

Vicarious trauma transfer might occur from:

1. imagining what their family member experienced,

2. they might hear, overhear or see what their parent experienced

3. new trauma experienced through the family member’s behaviour due to the original trauma.
