When should someone see their doctor?

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of complex-PTSD, talk to a doctor. They can refer you to a mental health professional with experience in trauma, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist.

When supporting someone with C-PTSD, practitioners should be following best practice.

There are a number of guidelines to follow when treating someone for Complex-PTSD. These include:
•  UK NICE guidelines
•  UK Psychological Trauma Guidelines
•  Australian Guidelines
•  Canadian Chronic Disease Prevention

Overall, when treating those with additional needs, such as Complex-PTSD, extra time may be needed to build trust and be aware of their stability and safety. This will impact the potential success of the treatment. Barriers to trauma therapies might need to be considered. Ongoing support are likely to be needed after therapy finishes to manage any lingering symptoms, resurfacing emotions or thoughts, and other conditions.
