Time for Music (Trombone)
Nick's Mama plays the trombone. It is a brass instrument that is made of metal and is played by making a raspberry sound into a mouthpiece.
Here is Lewis playing the sound into the mouthpiece.
The raspberry sound pushes air into the mouthpiece causing vibrations. When the mouthpiece is put into the trombone, the air then travels through the trombone to make a louder and deeper sound as shown here.
Also, you can notice in the video above, that Lewis is making different notes (or harmonics) as he changes the pressure on his lips as he showed you in the first video. So, before he moves his slide along, he can make quite a few notes in the same position.
The trombone has 7 slide positions. This video shows how Lewis can then slide between these positions to create a sliding sound.
In this video, Lewis is using a combination of moving his slide while also changing his lips to make a scale.
Trombones are wonderful bass instruments and make a very powerful sound in orchestras and jazz bands. here is a recording of a jazz band featuring a trombone solo. During the solo, the player uses a mute which brass players often use.
You will see other jazz instruments in this recording. Can you name some of them?
Which is your favourite jazz instrument? Why do you like it?
Cat Empire is an Australian jazz-rock band that uses trombone and other brass instruments.
